The speed at which our country started developing in the different sectors of the economy, there was a huge input of time and energy and manpower. Everyone has to work harder to earn a better income while leaving their old parents and invalid relatives at home under the care of untrained “Garde-Maladr”. The impact was such that this created a grand in the caring of elderly and sick persons left at home.


The director, a man of vision, decided to make an in-depth survey in the different parts of Mauritius. His findings confirmed the urgent and immediate need of trained healthcare assistants to provide the caring needs of those persons left on their own at home. And so was born the first private training institution in year 2006 under the name HealthCare Assistance & Home Nursing situated in the ARC Building at Sir William Newton Street Port Louis, where specialized training was being dispensed to interested persons willing to work in home nursing sector.

At that time only two courses were approved by the MQA:
1. Health care Assistant Training course
2. Baby sitting Training Course

Popularity
Both courses became very popular and greatly appreciated by everyone. We received lots of compliments and encouragements from doctors, nurses, clinics, medical labs, hotels and the public.

Dream becomes a reality
Not to forget our ex-students, whose lives we changed and keep on bringing smiles of satisfaction for being in a career they never dreamt of, some five years ago. “You get an immerse personal satisfaction when you know today, you have touched someone’s life with your caring, love and attention” said one of our ex-student.
The job of healthcare assistants is quite demanding and need lots of energy, patience and love for caring. They usually work in the supervision of qualified nurses and, are most of the times, in contact with patients assisting the nurses with the routine works.

Theory & Practice.
After all, training people to work with old and sick persons is very serious and demanding on the part of the care workers. Therefore the training programmes have to be very elaborated in order to satisfy these requirements. All our training programmes have two components: the theoretical and practical. The theoretical part is taught in our classrooms with technical details and lots of demonstrations in the practice laboratory.

After acquiring the classroom experience, students are sent in clinical placements where they put in practice their knowledge of nursing procedures, all under supervision of the in charge nurses who will also be their mentors.

Regulated by MQA
To be frank, our success would not have been possible without the support of the most disciplined and respected regulatory body, the Mauritius Qualification Authority (MQA) whose visiting officers guide and monitor us at every step we make. Thanks a lot MQA for your vision, mission and support. The training we offer is of high quality and we fully comply to the Quality Assurance policy set by the MQA.

Specialized Training
As we became specialized in fields of Health care training, we had to find an appropriate name and the above name was changed to “BSSR School of ParaMedical Studies” as we moved on to a more spacious building on Lord Kitchener Street (opp. Caserves) – Port Louis where better service and facilities are provided to our students. The classroom are equipped with air conditioning, we have a fully equipped training lab, all conducive to learning.
Discipline & Progress
Our students maintain high school discipline as well as a collaborative environment. The success rate is as high as 98.8 %. The credit goes to the team of dedicated trainers supported by their Manager, Mr I. Beessessur.

Age Group
Our students not only come from different age groups ? from school leavers to retired persons, but also from different walks of life: Police Officers, Firemen, Teachers, First Aiders, shop assistants, ex factory workers, etc. They come from all around the island because we are in a central position, near all the bus terminals

Learning Outcome
Most of our ex-students are working in clinics, nursing homes, hospitals and hotels. Others have gone abroad, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, etc for higher studies. Quite a few have joined in groups and are providing home nursing services. Very often we get calls from the public asking for healthcare assistants to take care for their sick parents.

Objectives
Our objective is to offer practical training programmes to unemployed people and give them a second chance to earn a living, instead of being jobless. We run seven days a week and deliver these following courses:

(1) Diploma in Health Care (City & Guilds of London)
(2) Health Care Assistant Training
(3) Early childhood development
(4) Reflexology for better health
(5) Swedish Massage for health
(6) First Aid

Most people will agree that health is wealth and these health care courses carry lots of benefits in terms of wealth. The learner will become aware of his health and will always thrive to keep everyone healthy around him. He can convince people how to take good care of their health, and being aware of the dangers of bad habits, such as drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, junk food, etc, he can help people to keep away from these killers.
